Our project at TIME commemorating the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks produced much more than a magazine issue. We saw it as an opportunity to reach our audience through every medium at our disposal. We tried to figure out how to use each medium as effectively as possible, rather than just replicate the issue on different platforms.
FILMS: I directed 46 short documentaries featuring interviews with some of the notable figures involved in 9/11 and its aftermath. This is the trailer for both the films and our interactive website, which won an Emmy (2012) in the category “New Approaches to News Documentaries.”
HBO DOCUMENTARY: I worked with Lisa Heller, an executive producer at HBO, to create a 49-minute documentary using all of our interviews from the project. It first aired at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2011.
EXHIBITION: We installed an exhibition at MILK Gallery, in New York City. The opening reception featured a screening of the HBO documentary and a live discussion between Time’s editor in chief, Rick Stengel, and Rudolph Giuliani.
BOOK: We published a 112-page hardcover book that wove the oral histories from our interviews together with Marco Grob’s portraits.
PRINT: We dedicated an entire issue of TIME to the project. For the front cover, we commissioned a photo illustration by Julian Laverdiere and Paul Myoda; we asked Jenny Holzer to create an original artwork that served as the back cover.
