The covers of TIME Magazine are tktktk. I assigned a number of major photographers that would shoot the pictures and also I would produce the pictureAs the director of Photography, my job is to commission the best photographer to articulate a particular story for everything including the Cover of the Magazine to TIME’s Instagram feed. At TIME, this could mean sending a photographer to the
front lines of a war zone, reacting quickly to breaking news and sending a photographer into a scene as it is unfolding or sending a photographer to the White House for a two minute portrait sitting with the President of the United States. All the while, the photo editor’s job is to be the photographer’s advocate, which means that I am involved in overseeing every level of production, wrangling time from the subject, securing access and in the end, making sure we publish the work with respect, thoughtfulness and most of all, impact.
But my job at TIME has been much bigger than photo editing. When I came to TIME, I realized that TIME is a global brand that opens doors and provides access to some of the most important people in the world. With that in mind, I have spearheaded some of the most ambitious projects in the company, from the Emmy Award winning Beyond 9/11 Project, to a Year in Space, to the 100 Most Influential Photographs in History, to Finding Home and Firsts. All of these projects have a strong photographic component, but they are also anchored by award winning video series. Most of the projects are designed for a digital canvas but also live other lives as Magazine special issues, and Books.
I believe so fundamentally in visual storytelling, that I was able to create two brands: Red Border Films, TIME’s documentary film unit and LightBox, a canvas for photography. My career at TIME has been ambitious and creative. I have build an award winning staff and there has been nothing we have not been able to achieve together. In 2014TKTK, when Nancy Gibbs took over as the Editor of TIME, she promoted me so that my title also included “Visual Enterprise”. That part of my title reflects my passion for big enterprise projects in addition to my love of photography.
Throughout this website I will break this down more for each section.
