In the summer of 2016, when Hillary Clinton became the first female major-party nominee for President, I was inspired to create a multimedia project highlighting women who had broken barriers in a variety of fields. My team and I created a list of 46 pioneering athletes, scientists, lawmakers, entertainers and entrepreneurs, and I assigned Luisa Dörr, a young Brazilian photographer I discovered on Instagram, to photograph the women over the course of a year. Dörr exclusively used her iPhone camera, including for the cover images. For the resulting special issue of the magazine, published on September 8, 2017, we designed 12 separate covers – a first in the magazine’s history – each highlighting a trailblazing woman: Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mo’ne Davis, Ellen DeGeneres, Ava DuVernay, Oprah Winfrey, and others. The final product included an interactive website, a series of short films, a hardcover book, and a 36-page photographic portfolio (seen here).
