The FIRSTS project at TIME included 12 covers, a 36-page portfolio in the print magazine. But it didn't stop there. It also included a book, a public event, and a digital hub that contained dozens of videos. As editorial director, I oversaw the entire project. I hope it will be as inspiring to other women as it is to me.
VIDEO: I was the series director for dozens of short films that live on an interactive hub for the project.
EVENT: On September 12, we hosted an event at TIME that included a panel moderated by TIME's editor in chief, Nancy Gibbs, with Sylvia Earle, Maya Lin, Carla Hayden and Kathryn Sullivan and we screened many of the films.
TV: Nancy Gibbs and I appeared on CBS This Morning to promote the project.
BOOK: TIME published a standalone 192 page hardcover book available on Amazon that features portraits and extended interviews of the 46 women we featured in the project.
PRINT: The issue features 12 split run covers, each highlighting a member of FIRSTS. This was a first in TIME's history.
The issue also included a 36 page photographic portfolio by Luisa Dorr.
SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: We asked Aretha Franklin to perform a song for us to publish with the project. She performed "Rock of Ages" in her father's church in Detroit. Her performance was directed by Gillian Laub.
